Devoted Book Review

book book review devoted parenting prayer theology book

Title + Author: Devoted by Tim Challies

Length: 124 pages

Overview: Devoted is a book about great men in Christian history and the godly mothers that shaped them. Each chapter takes a look a different man and their mother. The chapters detail how these godly mothers impacted their sons and how we can be encouraged and challenged to follow their examples. This book really snuck up on me. I didn’t expect to learn so much and be so convicted at the same time. Each story drew me in and left me in awe of what God can do with one woman’s obedience to Him.

Who should read it: Every mother. The book is about men and their mothers, but the lessons apply to moms raising daughters too. I think every mother will come away with many things to apply to their own parenting.

Favorite Quote: “You can always sit at Jesus’ feet and pour out your sorrows, your anxieties, and you can take those precious babies that you feel you are royally messing up and lay them at his feet, knowing you are too weak and too imperfect to bear the weight of saving them yourself.”

Something I’m applying: I was struck by how each of these mom’s lives were marked by prayer for their children. I felt so convicted about not being very disciplined in praying for my own children. I came up with the plan to set alarms on my phone for each of my kids to remind me to pray for them daily. I’ve been at that for about a month now and have already seen the impact of consistently praying for my children.

Read this book, you won't regret it! You can purchase it here.
