Social Sanity in and Insta World was a timely read for me. I had been struggling with feeling discontent for a few months when I read this book. A lot of things played into it, but this book helped me realize that social media was definitely contributing to it more than I was giving it credit for.
This book compiles chapters from multiple authors that cover different things to consider as we look at how social media affects us. It covers topics including identity, emotions, discernment, relationships, and so on. Each topic is looked at through the lens of scripture to see what a biblical response to social media should be.
This isn't a book that will tell you to delete all your social media accounts, although you may come to that conclusion after reading it. Social Sanity in an Insta World will help you consider social media from a Christian worldview and help you navigate how to keep it in the proper place in your life.
I find it hard to keep it in balance since I use social media for work and for ministry. This book caused me to pause and re-evaluate my priorities. Right after I finished reading it, I felt compelled to completely delete all my accounts and never look back. After some prayer and letting it simmer for a bit, I decided to just take a step back from it and establish better habits around social media.
Melissa Kruger says in chapter 4: "Our greatest problem isn't spending too much time on social media. Our greatest problem is that we're not spending enough time in our Bibles." I think that is a conviction to all of us.
